Project Story

reHealthAfrica has partnered with DEMOLA Cape Town and Johannesburg to solve a number of interesting health & Wellness challenges. Students and Industry interested in solving these challenges through the DEMOLA innovation work & co-creation programme can apply at either capetown.demola.net or johannesburg.demola.net.

DEMOLA is a 3 month facilitated co-creation programme with resources to help you develop demo solutions for a specific challenge. The reHealthAfrica challenges will be hosted at mLab Cape Town and Resolution Circle in Johannesburg.

Brief:
Join us in developing new ways of getting 1 million children active in South African schools

Background:
In South Africa 2 out of 10 learners are classified as obese which is double the global average. Children have replaced daily physical activities like playing outside with video games and watching more than 3 hours of TV per day resulting in them having a much higher BMI than their physically active peers. To add to the problem many schools no longer have PE/LO as a compulsory subject. reHealth Africa believes that physical exercise is one for the most stimulating and creative lessons for children and that what they learn at school becomes the foundation for much of what they will do in later life. This applies to their physical abilities like balance and coordination. We should inspire children and teachers to value physical exercise lessons as being fun and rewarding.

Problem:
With PE (Physical Exercise) not being available or popular in schools we are interested in developing ways that empower teachers to make PE more fun and inspiring to the children and their parents to make smarter decisions regarding their children’s overall health. We are also interested in understanding how you would define “active” and measure achievements against this.
